Planting to Grow

Doing low maintenance and high curb appeal.

Are you excited about spring time coming? Me too. Do you know what you should be pruning this time of year? Did your plants not bloom last year? What do you think happened? If you prune your azaleas now in January, you are cutting off the blooms that will be the flowers this spring. Timing is very important.

There is a time and season for everything, especially in the yard landscape. Join me February 5th at 11 a.m. at the Oxford Library as I will discussing and showing you how and when to prune.

Jeff,
My spring bulbs have stopped blooming! They didn't bloom last year and I have my doubts about this year. I have thought that maybe they are planted too close to our house or is it because they begin to shoot out of the ground too soon? The shoots start breaking out of the ground in late Dec. and early Jan. I want to yell to them "No, go back into the ground!" because I know we still have plenty of cold temps ahead. What do think? Why are they not blooming. They bloomed the first two years we planted them, but I haven't seen a healthy bloom since. Please help!

Allie, sun light may be the factor. Bulbs need and like sun, also make sure you don't remove the old flowers or leaves until they turn brown, usually need to wait about 6 weeks.
As far coming up in December, that is nature, it based on light and weather.
If you move them, do it in the fall around November. Let me know how they do.

Jeff: I have a gardenia bush that appears to have been "burned" by the cold weather. Even though the branches are still alive, all the leaves have turned brown and curled. Should I prune the bush or leave it alone and see if it puts new leaves on? The bush is approximately 2 years old and about 3 feet tall. Thanks -- Patricia
